Atelier announces portfolio of GPRS TSY Telephony Modules for Symbian OS

Handset manufacturers make “first call” in weeks with Atelier telephony drivers for Symbian OS

Paris – April 15th, 2002

Atelier, the leading expert in telephony software for Symbian OS today announced the availability of a portfolio of Symbian OS GSM/GPRS Telephony Modules (TSY), greatly shortening the process of integration of telephony software with baseband hardware for Symbian OS phones. Manufacturers can gain time-to-revenue advantage using Atelier TSYs.

The recent availability of the Nokia Series 60 software platform, UIQ user interface for Symbian OS and wireless hardware platforms such as Texas Instruments’ OMAP and Intel XScale, provide handset manufacturers with nearly all the building blocks for their 2.5G and 3G Symbian OS phones. Until today, however, TSYs were still highly critical components because handset manufacturers had to design them from scratch to interface between the telephony software running on the specific application processor and the baseband hardware.

Today, Atelier makes available a portfolio of GPRS TSYs, reducing the telephony integration process to mere weeks by providing handset manufacturers with almost out-of-the-box telephony integration, dramatically reducing the time to market of Symbian OS phones. Atelier TSYs are compatible with the Nokia Series 60 platform and Symbian UIQ user interface.

Atelier’s TSYs have been developed for a wide range of protocol stacks from leading suppliers including Condat, Ericsson Mobile Platforms, Optimay, TTPCom and Wavecom. Reference implementations are available immediately for Texas Instruments’ OMAP 710 and TCS2100 GPRS digital basebands, Ericsson Mobile Platform GPRS solutions, Wavecom’s GSM/GPRS modules, amongst other wireless solutions. Atelier TSYs are application processor independent and have been tested on Texas Instruments’ OMAP™ 710 and 1510, Intel XScale™ PXA 250 processors and SA-1110 (StrongARM) and Motorola DragonBall™ MX1. Atelier TSYs fully implement Symbian OS ETEL’s Core API, Basic GSM API, Advanced GSM API, GPRS API and SIM Application Toolkit API.

“Atelier has a proven expertise and track experience in telephony software”, said David Wood, Symbian's Executive Vice-President, Technical Consulting. “The TSY telephony module can be among the trickiest software to write in a Symbian OS phone. Atelier's offerings in this area will enable manufacturers to speedily bring enchanting high-quality new phone models to market, benefiting from the rich integrated functionality in Symbian OS”.

Atelier also offers unique design and development expertise in Symbian OS telephony areas including ETEL and Multimode ETEL, ETEL Server Extensions, TSY Telephony Modules, proprietary signaling stack interface and SIM Application Toolkit.

“The development of a Symbian OS TSY Telephony Module takes up to ten man years and requires expertise in both wireless telephony protocols and the Symbian OS ETEL telephony architecture. Now that hardware and software platforms are available for Symbian OS phones, handset manufacturers are looking for the last missing telephony integration building block to shorten time their market even further.” Said Marc Menschenfreund, Atelier’s CEO. “Atelier has tens of man years of experience writing such telephony modules and our portfolio of core TSYs for major protocol stacks enables us through a special agreement with Symbian, to deliver ready-made or custom TSYs to our customers in a reduced timeframe, minimizing risks on such highly critical components. Adapting our TSYs to new protocol stacks usually requires only a couple of weeks”.
